Why Does My AC System Turn On and Off So Often?

The term “short cycling” refers to an air conditioner that turns off before it completes a full cooling cycle. This issue is especially problematic in Red Bluff, CA, where summertime temperatures get close to 100 degrees. Here are three potential reasons your AC system turns on and off so much:

AC System Is Too Large

When you schedule an air conditioner replacement, one of the first things that any qualified service technician should do is determine which AC size is right for your home. Systems that are too small will run constantly to try to cool your home. However, a system that’s too large will turn on and off continuously, usually without getting your home as cool as you want.

An AC system that’s too large is possibly the worst-case scenario when it comes to reasons for short cycling. The only way to resolve this issue is to replace the air conditioner with one that’s the proper size for your property.

Dirty Air Filters

If an oversized AC system is the worst-case scenario, a clogged air filter is likely the best. There aren’t many HVAC maintenance tasks that you should handle by yourself, but replacing your system’s air filter is one of them.

Your filter traps dirt, dust and other debris before it can blow into your home, resulting in poor indoor air quality and excess strain on your air conditioner. If your AC system must work too hard to push air through a clogged filter, it may shut off frequently to avoid excess strain.

Damaged Ductwork

Damaged ductwork has the potential to put extreme strain on your AC system, which can lead to the system shutting off too often. When air escapes through holes and cracks in your ducts, your air conditioner will overcompensate while trying to achieve the desired temperature setting on your thermostat. Depending on the severity of the damage, you may need to schedule a duct replacement for your home.
